Connect an AI app

Connect WorkRoad to ChatGPT or Claude, check the connection and manage its access.

WorkRoad runs an MCP server at https://workroad.app/api/mcp. Add it to ChatGPT or Claude and the assistant can read your notes, make flashcards, quiz you with practice that counts toward your progress, and plan your week, all inside your WorkRoad account. You sign in to WorkRoad and approve the connection once. You don't need an API key, a terminal or anything installed.

Add WorkRoad to ChatGPT

Custom apps work in ChatGPT on the web with a paid plan (Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise or Edu). On a Business or Enterprise workspace, an admin may have to allow custom apps first. ChatGPT moves these menus from time to time, so the names may differ slightly.

  1. Open ChatGPT's Plugins page, choose + and then Add custom MCP server. If it isn't there, turn on Developer mode in Settings → Security and login first.
  2. Name it WorkRoad, and under Connection paste https://workroad.app/api/mcp as the server URL. If it asks how to authenticate, choose OAuth.
  3. Choose I understand and want to continue, then Create as a plugin, and install it.
  4. ChatGPT opens WorkRoad. Sign in if you aren't already, read what ChatGPT will be able to do, and choose Allow access. You land back in ChatGPT, connected.
  5. In a new chat, type @ and pick WorkRoad. Then ask, for example, "What's due in WorkRoad this week?"

Add WorkRoad to Claude

This works on claude.ai, the Claude desktop app and the Claude mobile apps. The Free plan can add one custom connector; Pro and Max can add more. On a Team or Enterprise plan, an Owner adds the connector under Organization settings → Connectors and you then connect it yourself.

  1. On claude.ai, go to Customize → Connectors (in older versions, Settings → Connectors).
  2. Click Add custom connector.
  3. Name it WorkRoad and paste https://workroad.app/api/mcp as the server URL. If Claude asks how to sign in, choose Sign in now, and for the OAuth client choose Register automatically. Click Add.
  4. Click Connect. Claude opens WorkRoad: sign in if you aren't already, read what Claude will be able to do, and choose Allow access.
  5. In a chat, click +, open Connectors and turn WorkRoad on. Then ask, for example, "Quiz me on my biology flashcards."

Claude asks before it uses a tool. Choose Always allow only for things you're happy for it to do without asking, such as reading your notes.

Check the connection

Start a new chat, enable WorkRoad and ask, "What is due in WorkRoad this week?" The assistant should use WorkRoad to answer. In ChatGPT, select WorkRoad with @; in Claude, enable it under + → Connectors.

Connection help

  • If the custom app or connector option is missing, check the plan and workspace requirements in the setup steps above. A workspace admin may need to enable it.
  • If WorkRoad is connected but no tools appear, enable it in the current chat. After changing permissions, reconnect so the client refreshes its tool list.
  • If an action is refused, check the permissions you approved. Deleting data and spending the AI allowance need separate approval.
  • If access has ended, connect again and approve it in WorkRoad. Changing your password disconnects all apps.

What a connected app can do

The approval screen lists what the app will be able to do, in plain words: read your notes and files; see your flashcards, practice tests, progress, tasks and timetable; write notes and flashcards; run practice that counts toward your progress; plan your week; use AI features from your AI allowance; change your settings; and delete things. Each line stands for a set of API scopes: a connected app gets every scope except webhooks:manage, and the tools it sees are the same ones an API key with those scopes sees. Its calls count toward the same rate limits and AI allowance. Deleting things and using your AI allowance stay off unless you tick them there.

The screen names ChatGPT or Claude only when WorkRoad has checked that your approval goes to them. If it says the app is unverified, or the address it shows isn't the app you're using, choose Deny.

Everything the app does, it does as you. It can't see other people's data or change your password, sign-in methods or plan.

Costs and AI uses

On the free plan, you can connect one app at a time, and your connected apps and API keys share 100 requests a month. Each tool call that does something in WorkRoad, such as reading a note or saving a set, is one request. Listing the tools and reading these docs don't count. WorkRoad Plus has full access, with no monthly count and up to 20 connected apps. Settings → Usage shows how many requests are left, and Monthly requests on the free plan has the details.

Your assistant can write notes, cards and tests itself and save them without spending WorkRoad AI uses. WorkRoad AI features use your allowance. Grading short answers in a test your assistant wrote costs one AI use per submit; grading is included when WorkRoad wrote the test. See agent workflows for examples.

Disconnect an app

To stop an app, open Settings → Connected apps and choose Disconnect. It loses access straight away. Connecting and disconnecting both show in your security activity under Settings → Security. Changing your password disconnects every app, and WorkRoad emails you whenever a new one connects.
