# Recording a lecture

> Record audio from a note and follow the transcript as it arrives.

Recordings belong to a note.

Each recording counts as one [AI use](https://workroad.app/docs/plans), including its translation.

## Start a recording

1. Open a note and its **Recordings** page, then choose **Create recording**.
2. In the recording options, select **Microphone** for your microphone, **Tab audio** for audio playing in another tab, or both.
3. Choose **Start recording** and allow microphone access if asked. For tab audio, choose the tab playing the lecture and enable the browser's **Share tab audio** option.
4. Use **Pause** and **Resume** for a break. Choose **Finish and save** when you are done and wait for the recording to finish saving.

## While you record

The saved transcript arrives about a minute at a time, so it can lag behind the speaker. **Live preview**, where supported, shows temporary microphone text sooner. It is not saved and switches off while tab audio is captured.

Use the star button to mark an important moment for generated notes. Pausing saves the audio captured so far; silence can also end the current audio segment.

A recording session can last up to four hours.

## Reloading and navigating

You can move around WorkRoad while the recorder panel keeps running. Avoid reloading during a lecture: saved transcript segments return, but the latest unsaved audio may be lost. After a reload, share tab audio again.

## Review the recording

After recording, the transcript stays anchored to the audio timeline. Click a transcript line to seek to that point. During playback, the line currently being spoken is highlighted.

## Turn the recording into notes

After the recording finishes, open **Generators** on its note. Select the recording under **Recordings**, choose the generation options, then **Generate note**. WorkRoad writes notes from the selected material and shows progress while it works. A generation counts as one [AI use](https://workroad.app/docs/plans).

## Missing sound or transcript

- If microphone access was refused, allow it in the browser's site permissions and start again. Watch the microphone level in the recording panel.
- For tab audio, use Chrome, Edge or Opera, choose a tab that is playing sound and tick **Share tab audio**. If the share contains no audio, choose it again. **Add tab audio** adds it to a running recording.
- If no text appears immediately, wait for the first minute to be transcribed. Missing live preview does not mean the saved transcription has stopped.
- If saving ends with an assembly error, open the recording and choose **Retry assembly**.
