# Notes and the editor

> Create structured notes, connect related work, and see what links back to each note.

Open `/notes` to browse your notes. You can place notes in folders and link each one to a subject. Open a note at `/note/<id>` to edit it.

## Write and format

The editor uses rich text blocks. Type `/` to open the slash menu, or drag a block by its handle to move it. Selecting text opens a formatting toolbar.

You can add:

- headings, paragraphs, and text alignment
- bulleted lists, numbered lists, and task lists with checkboxes
- tables
- code blocks with syntax highlighting
- inline and block maths rendered with KaTeX
- images pasted or dropped into the editor
- inline dates: type `@today`, `@tomorrow`, `@yesterday` or `@2026-10-03`, or pick a day with `/date`. Click a date to change it.

Pasted and dropped images are uploaded and stored. The editor also shows a live word count and words-per-minute statistics.

### Maths

Type `$x^2$` followed by a space for an inline formula, or use `/math` to insert a formula block with a live preview. See [Maths in notes](https://workroad.app/docs/note-maths) for LaTeX, chemistry, physics and equation numbering.

## Import files

Use the import button beside **New folder**, or drop files or folders onto the notes list. WorkRoad turns supported files into notes. See [Importing notes](https://workroad.app/docs/importing-notes) for formats, scanned pages, exports from other apps and import limits.

## Link your work

Type `@` to mention one of your notes, tasks, subjects, flashcard sets, recordings, or tests. The editor inserts a live chip for the item. If you rename the item, the chip updates. If you delete it, the chip shows a tombstone instead of pointing to missing content.

Under each note, the backlinks panel lists everything that mentions that note. This gives you both directions of a connection: the mention where you inserted it and the backlink on the note it points to.

## Use notes elsewhere

Notes can supply material to the copilot. When you build a test, you can also choose notes as sources alongside flashcard sets.

A note's **Export** menu downloads it as Markdown, as Markdown with its files (ZIP), as HTML with its images, as a Word document or as a PDF. The Word document and the PDF keep the note's headings, lists, tables, code, images and formulas, each formula drawn as a picture. **Print** opens the note's print view instead, where your browser can also save it as a PDF.
